SOS Children's Villages started working in Kazakhstan in 1994, three years after the country had become independent from the Soviet Union. The country was undergoing social, political and economic changes which had a negative effect on the people of Kazakhstan. In response to these events, SOS Children's Villages started working in the city of Almaty, which lies on the border with China and was the Kazakh capital at the time. The work of SOS Children's Villages has increased and it is now supporting children, young people and families in three locations in Kazakhstan.

At present there are three SOS Children’s Villages, two SOS Youth Facilities, two SOS Kindergartens as well as five SOS Social Centres in Kazakhstan.
